Kanpur residents protested rain-damaged roads by symbolically renaming a street Yamraj ka Dwar

KANPUR: Residents of Kanpur protested against the worsening condition of rain-damaged roads by symbolically renaming 80 Feet Road in Barra as ‘Yamlok Dwar’. A young man, dressed as Yamraj, cut a ribbon to highlight the numerous waterlogged potholes.Protesters held a banner by the roadside that stated: ‘Yamraj ka Dwar-Grand Opening (road to hell grand inauguration)’. They claimed that the road was filled with hundreds of large potholes and blamed the negligence of Nagar Nigam for the difficulties faced by road users.Local residents conveyed that traveling on this road had become hazardous, as rainwater concealed the depth of the potholes, creating challenges for motorists. They called on Nagar Nigam to hasten the repairs of the road.They said that the state of the roads in the city is extremely poor, and protests are occurring almost daily.On Sunday, traders entered a pothole in the marble market of Kidwainagar. The Bharatiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal stated that their business was suffering due to the dilapidated roads and potholes. They expressed that residents of the city are distressed due to waterlogging and potholes.The protests regarding potholes originated from Sariya VIP Road in Jajmau, where a pothole approximately 18 ft deep had developed. On August 27, the Cantt MLA visited the site and, in protest of the absence of officials, descended into the pothole himself.The MLA remained in the pothole for around 4 hours and 30 minutes. He remarked that when the road conditions are so dire, the responsible officials should come to the location and assess the situation. After the officials arrived, the MLA exited the pothole.
